Over the past half century, technologies like seatbelts, airbags and advanced braking systems have dramatically reduced the rates of death and injury for people inside motor vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists, who share the roads with us, are another matter. While Canada experienced a decline in motor vehicle passenger fatalities of 18 percent in 2019, the same cannot be said of cyclists and pedestrians, who saw decreases of just 7 percent and 3 percent respectively, according to Transport Canada’s National Collision Database.
Protecting vulnerable road users is one of our chief concerns and is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility mandate. At Mazda, we have been doing our part as an automotive manufacturer, by developing i-Activsense safety technologies that directly improve pedestrian safety. An example is Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) that is focused on protecting pedestrians by maintaining proper speed limits in school zones and other areas with lower speed limits. But there is a whole suite of features all designed to increase safety for all road users.
The latest CX-5 has added Smart City Brake Reverse, Driver Attention Alert, and a 360-Degree View Monitor as upgraded features. Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) aids drivers with sensors along the front and rear, while the 360-Degree View Monitor utilizes similar sensors and provides the driver with a full view of the environment around the vehicle. These upgrades and many others assist drivers in multiple ways, collectively contributing to a more alert and responsive driver.
