THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A VEHICLE

5 Minute Read

Pre-production model shown with accessories. Production vehicle may not be exactly as shown

Bringing home a new vehicle is an exciting feeling that can’t be matched. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you’re just starting your vehicle-buying journey.

BUYING NEW VS. USEd

BENEFITS OF BUYING A NEW VEHICLE

Nothing beats that new car smell. When you buy new, you’ll have the ability to customize all the vehicle specs just the way you like them: your favourite trim, colour, accessories and more. Buying a new vehicle also means that your vehicle will not require as much maintenance as a pre-owned vehicle. Buying new also means different warranties and financing options.

If you are buying a new vehicle, check out Mazda’s Unlimited Warranty, which is offered on all new vehicles.

BENEFITS OF BUYING A USED VEHICLE

If you’re looking at buying a previously owned vehicle, you’ll find endless options.

Naturally, the used vehicle market means a wider variety of vehicles and model years to choose from so you can find the perfect fit for your driving needs. Used vehicles from previous model years also means there will be more reviews and information available, compared to newly released vehicles.

If you are considering a pre-owned vehicle, check out Mazda’s Certified Pre-Owned Program and find the perfect vehicle for you.

TIPS FOR SHOPPING AND BUYING

RESEARCH

While doing your research ahead of purchasing a vehicle, ask yourself the following questions:

    • What type of vehicle best suits my lifestyle and needs?
    • What is my monthly and yearly budget for a vehicle, maintenance and insurance?
    • How much cargo space do I need?

Answering these questions will help narrow your search so you can focus your research on just the vehicles that fit your needs.

SOURCES

If you’re considering a Mazda vehicle, Mazda Canada offers great tools to help identify the best vehicle for you:

    • Build & Price your future Mazda vehicle with this online tool, so you can go step-by-step to customize the vehicle of your dreams.
    • Mazda’s list of Certified Pre-Owned vehicles is a great tool if you’re considering buying used. Select from used Mazda vehicles that have passed Mazda’s rigorous 160-point inspection of approval and learn about all the features and warranties Mazda offers.

TAKING A TEST DRIVE

To help you on your test drive, here’s a quick checklist of things to inspect so you can be sure the vehicle is in top condition when you bring it home:

  1. Adjust the driver’s cabin to your liking and make sure the steering wheel, seat and mirrors are ideal.
  2. Identify the blind spots and make sure that they are not too much of an obstruction for your preference.
  3. If you have a child car seat, ensure that the exact car seat fits in the vehicle you are testing.
  4. Ensure that the trunk and cargo space are suitable to your liking.
  5. Ensure there are no issues with the engine when you start the vehicle. Be sure to listen for unnatural sounds when you start the vehicle.
  6. Ensure there are no issues when changing the transmission from Park to Drive. Be mindful of any unnatural sounds as the transition from Park, to Neutral, to Drive should be seamless with no abrupt noises.
  7. Drive the vehicle on both highway and road to see that steering, acceleration, brakes and signal lights are working.
  8. When in Park towards the end of your test drive, have a look under the hood of the vehicle to ensure there is no leakage on the ground beneath the vehicle.
  9. Ensure that all buttons on the dashboard are working.

When you’re ready, book a test drive with Mazda or find the retailer closest to you.
